What is a Nurse Practitioner?

A nurse practitioner (NP) is a registered nurse (RN) who has completed additional advanced education (a minimum of a master's degree) and training in the diagnosis and treatment of common medical conditions; both acute and chronic. NPs may work both independently or collaboratively as part of a health care team.

Nurse practitioners provide a broad range of services, including: physical examinations, ordering and interpreting laboratory tests, diagnosis and assessment, and preventive health screening and counseling. NPs are also licensed to write prescriptions.
